WOMEN'S VEIL, 2016

mixed media on masonite board

Women's Veil portrays conflicting perceptions on women imposed by the society. Nudity expresses the vulnerable positions females take on as women are pressured to "cover up", both physically and emotionally. The veil, made of beancurd skin; translucent and fragile, suggests the impossibility of complete concealment. Stereotypes of woman involvement with domestic affairs such as cooking is also underlined through the material used, commonly seen as meat wrapping in Chinese food such as 五香卷 Ngoh Hiong.
